Then maybe we shouldn't always stick to the cold, hard truth. I think it's mostly adult fiction that presents more bleak and hopeless endings on a more regular basis. I quite like it when a YA adult ends things unhappily. Or even shows that there's more work to be done in order for things to level out towards happiness. It feels more realistic. I mean, sure there's Allegiant and TFIOS but there's also countless contemporary romances and books like Champion and The City of Heavenly Fire, which have pretty reasonably happy endings. And we all know these YA books are unrealistic anyway, so it's not like they're trying to make them "authentic" or anything.
