Fandom Freak Out: Thoughts on Mockingjay(Part 1)

With 'The Hanging Tree' playing on repeat in the background, which it has been from the moment I returned from the cinema, I'm going to attempt to form some coherent thoughts on the third installment of 'The Hunger Games' franchise. Having been hesitant about the adaptation before it began, sat wearing my Mockingjay Pin in hope that it would include some of my own favourite scenes from the novel, within a few minutes of the opening credits I was already in love with the movie. And I was in complete support of the decision to split the novel in two.

Cast: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Donald Sutherland and Julianne Moore
Synopsis: IMBD
Rating: 12A/PG-13

If you haven't see 'Mockingjay: Part 1' yet, you may want to come back later! This review contains spoilers!

***

It's taken me a while, and a few illegible notes, to decide where I want to begin with this review. What I've realised is that 'Mockingjay: Part 1' took the most subtle details from a novel of over four hundred pages, even when an event may have been briefly mentioned in a sentence, and made them into a key element of this adaptation. It took the idea of propaganda, where Katniss becomes almost an advertising campaign for the rebellion, and designed the plot around it. A decision that the team behind the franchise should be applauded for. 'Mockingjay' showed what certain messages like those depicted in the District 13 broadcasts can lead to. Our main character's words have the ability to cause a huge reaction in Panem, triggering events that are only hinted at in the novel, since we remain with Katniss' point of view throughout the book series. What I loved about 'Mockingjay: Part 1' was how it allowed us to see what was taking place in the other districts; to really see the effect that the Mockingjay has on the people. When the Capitol's electric supply is taken-out; when the workers rebel in District 7; when those in the districts sing 'The Hanging Tree'. They all became promiment parts of the film. The filmmakers did cut from our protagonist's point-of-view throughout, but it brought Collins' whole world alive. I already want to go back and see it again.

Katniss is, quite frankly, an entirely different person in 'Mockingjay'. Having competed in the Hunger Games twice, faced Snow's threats, and lost Peeta to the Capitol, it is no surprise that she is torn apart. Jennifer Lawrence had quite the task to portray this new-version of our main character, but from the opening description which was word-for-word perfect from the novel, she executed it brilliantly. She brought to life the raw emotions Katniss feels during the book, alternating between an extreme anger at the Capitol in the District 8 hospital(which made tears form in my eyes!) and the guilt that she feels over Peeta being captured, with ease. Each of the propos they set out to film resulted in a powerful scene from Lawrence, who - somehow - managed to add a hint of humour to the role at times. I can't quite describe how moving her scenes were, but the team behind the franchise created the perfect balance. The eerie silence that had it's hold over the cinema, nobody daring to even reach into a bag of popcorn - besides my mum - was forgotten for just a few moments. Making sure that Effie Trinket returned for this installment, even though the character is not featured in the novel, also managed to create a light-hearted atmosphere. Her reaction to life in District 13, without the eccentric outfit choices and luxuries of life in the Capitol, was a light-hearted sub-plot that I adored. Her scenes with Plutarch Heavensbee were priceless.

I'll admit, when I first caught a glimpse at the character posters for 'Mockingjay', I was hesitant about who they had chosen to portray Coin. In fact, this was the case for almost all of the new additions to the cast. And, once again, I was proven wrong. Seeing Julianne Moore's take on the District 13 President - where those who had read the books couldn't help but sit in a smug silence, knowing what was to come - was one of my favourite aspects of the movie. Each time she was present on the screen she held my attention. Moore was a powerful presence, one that challenged even Lawrence's, making me both love and hate her character. I also Natalie Dormer's edgy portrayal of Cressida, and the rest of the propo team, who were all determined and driven to get the job done. This aspect had merely been something on the side in the novel, so it was great to see it featured so much. I couldn't write this review without mentioning the leading-men, and how much Josh Hutcheson as the hijacked Peeta scared me. It was frightening to see!

There were changes made from page-to-screen, extra scenes from the districts across Panem edited into the movie, each improving on the book's content. Though, I would argue that this was still an adaptation that was made for the fans of the book. Having read multiple reviews from critics, it's clear that they could not look past the idea that there was no overthrowing of the Capitol or battle scenes taking place on the streets of Panem, all with Katniss centre-stage. For them, it's been merely a 'filler', whilst they await the release of the final fight-to-the-death style sequences. It was those who had read the books, or re-read multiple times, that noticed the attention to detail. The pearl that Katniss repeatedly fumbles with in her hands; the rope that Finnick clutches between his fingers; the roses that are found outside after the attack on District 13. Lines were taken, word-from-word for the book, and scenes were depicted as imagined. Those added scenes? They couldn't have been made better. Each built the tension, edited intricately into the movie, until it reaches a just about bearable cliff-hanger. Those working behind the camera on the editing really did tackle their role with skill.

Do I dare say that it was better than the first half of the book?

4.5 Stars

My Love/Hate Relationship with...The Final Split

Ever since 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows' was split into two movies, despite being one book, films such as 'Twilight: Breaking Dawn' have followed it's lead. Now, it's 'The Hunger Games' that is joining this group - with the final book of the trilogy, 'Mockingjay', having Part 1 adapted this year, with the conclusion of the franchise taking place next year with the release of 'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay(Part 2)'. For some people, this is something they hate; believing that it is only a way for the companies behind the films to make more money out of it's teenage audiences, and for others, it's an idea they adore.

When the announcement came that 'Mockingjay' would be split into two, I would be lying to say I was surprised. Hesitant, of course, but I did see it coming. The final book in the 'Hunger Games' series is one that builds up to an extremely emotional climax and, without that in Part 1, will it be seen as 'boring' - possibly? Sometimes, not all, there is just not enough content in a novel to make it work as two movies. This could be seen as the case for 'Mockingjay', where most of the action and excitement, rather than the build-up to it, happens near to the end of 'Part II - The Assault'(where Peeta reveals information to warn those in District 13 about a bombing). Does this mean that Part 1 will lack any of the gripping, heart-pounding and emotional scenes we are used to from the books, and the movies? This is the case for any book in the final series being split. When you reach it, the following of them is huge; and, there is no doubt that fans want the best adaptation. Yes, there's another film, but is there always enough to make one that won't be boring? You expect the biggest shocks to come at the end of the last book, which they do. So, what will happen to Part 1?

One of the main reasons for making two parts is the money. YA Adaptations have been doing incredibly well at the box-office recently; and it seems like they are not going to stop. This year alone, there are both stand-alone adaptations and new series' starting - recently 'The Fault in Our Stars' movie caused a huge amount of excitement when just the trailer was released - so, if a series is doing well, why finish? This is very much the case for 'The Hunger Games', since 'Catching Fire' was the biggest film of 2013 in the US last year, and broke too many records to list here. Clearly, if there's a chance not to just repeat it once, but twice, making even more money, it is going to be grasped with both hands? However, I hate to think that the only reason these books are being adapted is because of the money they make - which is quite manipulative. There are other, much more important reasons for adapting a book - such as the themes, which can change a generation - rather than just the amount of money it will gross.

I love book-to-film adaptations and I can be someone who likes seeing the conclusion of a series being split in two. I need the attention-to-detail that a longer running-time over two films can provide. Not only does this mean I get to see more from the characters I could connect to, or the world that I pictured in my mind, but the back-stories and more complicated details can be there. All of this detail is on my 'must have' list for adaptations - as the smaller scenes that don't move on the film as quickly if there's a limited time would have to be cut-out. Not only does having two films scream, "MORE BOOK SCENES! " at me, but it also means that these books that have inspired us can continue to make their way to the screen for a slightly longer time. There's another year of waiting for trailers, reacting to them, sticking posters up on your bedroom wall and anxiously awaiting release-date. When you love a series you just want it to continue - and trilogies are quite short anyway.

Personally, I fell in love with the choice of breaking-up the final instalment of the 'Twilight Saga' because it definitely worked. There were three main events and these were equally-spread out, giving us enough time to be introduced to the new characters that join the cast in Part 2. Hopefully, this will work for 'Mockingjay.'

So, do you have a love or hate relationship with the final book in a series being split into two films?

Must-See Moments: Catching Fire

This is my 250th Post!

Must-See Moments is a brand-new feature that I will be writing when a new book-to-film adaptation is about to hit cinemas. Of course, I think we all know that adaptations will not be a direct translation from book to screen, and there will be parts that didn't make into the movie. Even so, there are certain moments that need to be in there or all that counting down will have been for nothing.

There will be spoilers in the post for people who have not read Catching Fire.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is out on November 21st(in the UK). This means there are just TWO WEEKS until I - and other Tributes - can see the next book come alive. I remember being excited when it was 'One Year Until Catching Fire' and now we are almost in single-figures. I can't quite believe how quite it has come around - especially saying I can remember using computers in school to check whether Finnick had been cast yet!

I've also found myself dancing-around-my-living-room due to the fact TV Spots have started to appear in the adverts.

  1. The kiss shared between Katniss and Gale - When I read the books, at this point, I remember wanting Katniss and Gale to be together, as I'm one of 'those' people that wants the best-friend to get his/her happily-ever-after. When the kiss appeared in the trailer, I wasn't expecting it at all, and can't wait to see the build-up and the whole scene.
  2. District 11 - This is the first time we get to see the other district and Rue's district is going to hit the hardest. The speech Katniss has to give with Rue's family there and the man raising his hand into the three-fingered salute. I'm looking forward to how dramatic this is going to be.
  3. Gale's whipping - For some reason, and after over a year I'm still not quite sure, this was my favourite scene in the book. I can't recall why, I think it was the moment when the story changed for Katniss and she had to think-fast. Her best-friend being whipped really opened her eyes in my opinion so, I feel this was the driving-force of Catching Fire. In the first trailer, we saw Katniss say 'Go ahead' and I'm definitely ready to see how this resolves; to see how Haymitch steps in
  4. The Reaping - I've heard this is emotional - and we've seen clips of Katniss turning to Effie with a tear rolling down her face. I also have a lot of questions about how this is going to play-out: will Haymitch volunteer for Peeta like in the book, or will Peeta just be reaped? How will the people from District 12 react?
  5. Katniss' Skill - I have been wanting to see this scene come-alive for so long, and mostly, the Gamemakers' reaction.
  6. The Interviews  - There are quite a few interview I'm excited for. Not only the 75th Games one's *cough, cough* Peeta announces Katniss is pregnant and we get to see the Mockingjay Dress but, the moment Peeta proposes!
  7. Cinna's ending - There is a reason I'm carrying tissues in my pocket for this movie, as I know this is going to be upsetting. I'm curious about how this is going to happen, especially because of it's teenage-audience so, I will be sitting in my seat, knowing it is coming...
  8. The first look at the Arena - From all the trailers, it's clear this is going to be visually- incredible. As Katniss rises up from the tube it's going to be immensely dramatic and, just getting a feel for how Francis has gone about designing the clock-face is something I am hugely anticipating.
  9. Peeta's mouth-to-mouth resuscitation - I've been watching cast interviews other the past few days and all I have heard about is the snot that was in an out-take between Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Huthcerson at this point. Also, I really thought Peeta wasn't coming back and the way Katniss reacts will probably make me reach for my tissues.
  10. The beach scene - This is the part, if you can remember the book, where Peeta hands Katniss the locket and they stay together while watching the arena. I thought this was such a powerful scene in the book, and a part where you truly have no idea what is going to happen because they both want the other to win.

Fandom Freak-Out(1) - Atlas, TFiOS, and more HP!

Lately, I've been trying to figure out some new original features that will be fun to read! You may know that as well as running A Day Dreamer's World, I also set up the Goodreads Group 'Fandom Freak-Out' which is place for conversation about the latest book to film adaptations and the most anticipated books coming out next in a series(Right now this is Allegiant for me!). Although, this week there has been a LOT of news floating around the book world.

To begin, the first song off the Catching Fire Soundtrack has been officially released both in the UK and US now, and I've found myself turning up the radio everytime I hear it. At first, I didn't really like the pase of the song but, I've slowly warmed to it and think it's perfect when I need some music to play in the background when doing my homework.

From a fire, to more flames casting for Mockingjay has begun and recently, Julianne Moore has been announced as the latest member of the cast! She will play District 13 Leader President Alma Coin, and despite picturing her a lot differently, I think she will do the role justice! Also, my favourite casting took place a few weeks ago: Annie Cresta will be played by Stef Dawson! This  is such a perfect casting choice; and she looks just like Suzanne Collins described Finnick's love-interest!

Stef Dawson will play Annie Cresta! And she is one very lucky
girl!

At the moment, the movie adaptation of The Fault in Our Stars by John Green is filming. If you're a huge fan of the book like me, you would have probably found yourself constantly checking John Green's Twitter page for updates. There have been pictures of him and the cast - including them behind the scenes on set playing table-football and basketball and my favourite, Shailene Woodley(Hazel), Ansel Elgort(Gus) and John using a swing set. I think all of these updates are such a fantastic thing as it makes you feel more involved in the movie. We may not be on set experiencing it, but the tweets and vlogs mean we get to know what's going on, see the cast in costume and follow the process of one of our favourite books being turned into a visual right before us. Anybody else loving the Vlogs from the set?

Although, there can never just be positive news can there? Sadly, City of Ashes filming(which was due to begin this month) has been delayed indefinitely. This is to give enough time to re-write the script, which supposedly is very different from the actual book and because of the result of the takings from the City of Bones movie. I was really hoping that, after Beautiful Creatures also facing the same problem, City of Bones would do really well. Do you think Hollywood is trying to follow a trend that worked previously? And are there enough book-to-film adaptations for now?

You can read about what author Cassandra Clare had to say about the delay here.

I guess this is the right time to mention the fact a lot of people will be returning to the Wizarding World soon! Although, I have only read two of the Harry Potter books and seen three of the films, I feel like the brand new screenplay being written has made me finally realise I need to pick up these books. And before the new movie, which will be the FIRST PART of an adaptation of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them(First published in 2001). I am though, quite excited for the reason that it will allow a new generation to fall in love with books. Which is a very good thing.

Books I'd Like to see From Another POV

This is a post I really wanted to write since I'm on a night's break from Revision. I've been thinking a lot lately about what books I would love to see from another characters' perspective. I always seem to think, when a character makes a sudden reappearance, "Where have you been?" or "What happened?". Have you got any books you would like to see written from another point of view? I certainly do!

The Hunger Games Series by Suzanne Collins(Peeta & Gale's perspective) This is a tough one, as I would like to see all of the books from different perspectives but, I think the main one for me would be to see Peeta retelling the tale of the 74th Annual Games. I would love to see how he was able to escape Cato, how much he loves Katniss and how he was able to camouflage himself in the mud. He has such a gentleness to him, I'd like to see his point of view of being chosen for the games.

As for Mockingjay, I would devour a book from Gale's perspective. For people who have read the series, wouldn't you want to know what part he played in the heart-breaking run-up to the ending? I still want to know what thoughts went through his mind, and if anything was it all his fault.

Small Blue Thing by S.C Ransom(From Callum's perspective) Small Blue Thing is such a beautiful romance story, and Callum(who is a Dirge stuck in a half-life on misery) would be a brilliant character to get to read about. I would love to dig-deeper into the world of the Dirge's. I found the whole concept so interesting throughout the series, I think being able to find out more about the secrets of St Pauls Cathedral would be amazing. What about the moment he realises Alex has found the amulet, and he has a chance of freedom? I want to read this!

Divergent/Insurgent by Veronica Roth(Jeanine Mathews Novella) I wouldn't like to read a whole book from Jeanine's perspective but, I'd be first-in-line to purchase a novella. Getting inside her mind and seeing why exactly she decided to control the factions the way she does would be so interesting. Or maybe the novel from Caleb's or Tori's point of view, I think they are such complex characters, I mean, why did Caleb pick Erudite? The mysteries of novels! Who knows, maybe we'll find out in Allegiant!

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green(From Augustus Waters' perspective) It's hard to mention his name without feeling your eyes brim with tears but wouldn't a The Fault in Our Stars novella from his perspective be so touching. There is so much wisdom when it comes to Augustus and he can see the brighter side of everything. I'd love to read his words, they would be a masterpiece! And John Green I'm sure would be able to write this!

Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl (All with Ridley Duchannes) It would be difficult to have the whole plot told by her, but how evil(and I admit, fun) would it be to read from her POV. All the mischief and plans she makes. It would be a fast-paced, and slightly scary, but completely worth it read!

Geek Girl by Holly Smale(From Lion Boy's Perspective) Can you imagine how hilarious it would be to read Geek Girl from the boy Harriet meets under a table? His reaction when she started to try to explain herself would be priceless and have tears streaming down my face from the laughter and then the moment he finds her hyper-ventilating into a crisp packet. When you need a light-hearted and fun read this would be perfect. I completely fell in love with Harriet, Lion Boy and Toby of course and anymore I could grab from this cast would always be worth the read! Imagine if he felt as embarrassed as Harriet did!

What books would you like to read from anther POV?

The Best & The Rest 2012: Book to Film Adaptions

This is my second post in my the new feature as we head into 2013! About two weeks ago I posted about t The Best & The Rest: Books. This week, I'm taking a look at the book adaptions in 2012.

"Moments, my life is made up of a series of moments,
Let them go" - Tessa

Now Is Good is an adaption of Jenny Downham's novel, Before I Die. Now Is Good was truly fantastic! It was tear-jerking and moving but was also had funny moments throughout. It had such a strong story-line and Tessa, (Played by Dakota Fanning) was so powerful. It was also set in Brighton, so it brought the message close that Tessa is just a normal girl but going through such a heart-breaking experience although, she is still inspiring as she just wants to live. On Tessa's bucket list are take drugs, go on a date and break the law. Definitely one of my favourite films of the year! I'm yet to read the book but I've got on my wish-list for Christmas.

"I thought we would be safe forever,
but forever wasn't as long as I had hoped" - Bella Swan

Breaking Dawn Part 2 the conclusion to the Twilight Saga by Stephanie Meyer exceeded my expectations! I've never been a huge fan of Twilight but Breaking Dawn Part 2 was exhilarating! The climax was action-packed and exciting with the twist in the books' plot. I much preferred this ending because it brought so much to the film. Nobody could have predicted the ending. Overall, the film is also emotional and funny. Moments between Jacob and Charlie and comments by Emmet really bring laughter into this film. I really enjoyed this and thought is was an ending to tie all the loose ends together at the end.

"I wish I could think of a way to show them that they don't own me,
That I'm more than just another piece in their games" -Peeta Mellark

The Hunger Games, the first in the trilogy by Suzanne Collins, was exhilarating! It was true to the books by keeping in all the details that make them so special. It was emotional with the relationship between Katniss and Prim. It was exciting throughout the film, especially at the beginning and climax in the 74th Annual Hunger Games. Katniss was so powerful and was so honestly brought to life in this adaption. The Hunger Games was also captivating and took you into the world of Panem. You felt anger at the Capitol for forcing the 'tributes' to compete in this life-or-death game but the violence wasn't over-exaggerated. The Hunger Games was fantastic with every part of it from the music to the costumes being how I imagined or hoped them to be like.

Life of Pi is the book adaption of the novel of the same name by Yann Martel. I haven't yet seen this but, after seeing it advertising while in the cinema, I have to see it! It looks mesmerising! I'm hoping to go and see it after Christmas but I still think it will be incredible. From the trailer you can just see it will be such a unique.

What have been your book adaptions of 2012?
Is there anything you are looking forward to seeing come 2013?

Only 8 days to go!

The Hunger Games DVD Review!

In a place once known as North America, is the nation of Panem. Each year in Panem, the powerful Capitol forces each of the twelve districts to send one boy and one girl, called Tributes, between the ages of twelve and eighteen into an arena to fight to the death until one 'Victor' remains. This televised game is called 'The Hunger Games' and is to remind the districts of the rebellion that they lost and to keep them under the Capitol's control. At the public 'Reaping' sixteen year-old Katniss Everdeen from District 12, the poorest district volunteers to save her sister Primrose after she is chosen as the tribute. Pitted against tributes who have trained for this Katniss knows that to win she has to weight survival against humanity and life against love.

This is a very true adaption of an incredible book! This is a powerful film with strong characters and an emotional plot. Jennifer Lawrence who plays Katniss Everdeen is fantastic and strong in her role! She is the powerful and brave as the Katniss who wants to show the Gamemakes that she's more than just a piece in their games and the girl who wants to go home to be back with Prim and her mother. She embodies Katniss perfectly! Another thing was the way that you could leave Katniss' head and see what the reactions were outside the arena. The Gamemakers Control Centre was incredible to see and the way that it brings the realisation that they could click a button and kill a tribute. This film reduced me to tears and made me feel every possible emotion.

Even though I knew what was going to happen(Because of the book) it still had me on the edge of me seat with it's heart-racing plot. A main moment for me was the monologue on the rooftop, the night before the games begin. Peeta Mellark(Katniss' fellow tribute from District 12) is thinking about how he doesn't want to be changed into somebody he's not and die as himself. This moment is my favourite from the whole book because it is something that Katniss always refers to throughout the games. Josh Hutcherson who plays Peeta plays him with so much emotion and is very true to his character. This was overall I fantastic, strong and heart racing adaption which, was very true to the books! Also packed with hours of special features which are so interesting to see how much effort has gone into making this adaption and how it was made, with funny stories from the actors/actresses.

Rating(Feature Film)- 5/5
Special Features - 4/5
Rating - 12(Contains intense threat, moderate violence and occasional gory moments)

IT'S SUMMER & MY INSPIRATIONS!

It's finally that time of year again when we have a whole six weeks to ourselves! No teachers to tell us what to do, no homework to keep us stuck inside, no exact time we have to go to bed-it's SUMMER! Even the weather has realized this as it was 22 degrees earlier on today! I know it's already 2 DAYS into Summer and I'm only posting this now but I have been super, super busy! Of course your wondering what I've been doing exactly:
  • On Thursday I went to Oakwood Theme Park with the school as a Rewards Trip. I almost fell into the lake when my friends decided to swap places while in a paddle boat and once I'd survived that we realized the person now in the back couldn't stear the thing!
  • On Friday it was the last day of school! My tears were flowing like a river(Very emotional day), I was exhausted because I didn't back till late the night before and I was feeling sick(Who would turn down free cakes?)
  • Yesterday, I hit my hand on the top of the laptop and since it was bruised and  painful, when I gave it a go I couldn't type.
So, do you forgive me?

This post was supposed to be all about my inspirations. I think inspirations are really important to have. They are people you can look up too and when you've got a problem you know the person that inspires you has probably gone through a similar thing.

One of my biggest inspirations is Katy Perry. No matter how much she has gone through in the past year she is still going strong. Unlike most celebrities she handled the breakup of her marriage like an adult, instead of going out and getting drunk-trying to block out what is going on around her. Another reason why she is one of my inspirations is because she stays true to herself and her style-this is exactly the type of person I hope to be. She has been knocked down but has still got straight back up!

Another of my inspirations is Demi Lovato. When she knew she having troubles with annorexia she left Disney to sort them out. This is why I admire her. She faced her problems and came back when she was ready. Now she is looking healthier and doing better than when she was part of Disney.

In Disney's 'Sonny with a Chance'

Demi now as a judge on X-Factor USA

Jennifer Lawrence is also one of my inspirations because even though everyone said she was too old for the role of Katniss Everdeen and fans didn't think she was the right person, she proved them all wrong. She also still took the role and ignored all the criticism, playing the perfect Katniss! The other reason if she didn't except the role right away but actually thought about how this would change her life. Unlike some actor's she didn't accept straight away and then regret it later-she took some time to think.

Before she became Katniss, at the Academy Awards in 2011

K'atniss Everdeen the girl on fire'

Members of my family inspire me everyday. My Nan who beat Cancer last summer inspires me because she stayed strong and fought through it. She inspired me to fight for what I believe in. Then there's my mum and dad who inspire me to do whatever I can to make them proud and be a good person.

These are just some of my inspirations, who are yours?

Just an update from a day dreamers world,

THE HUNGER GAMES MOCKINGJAY REVIEW!

I have now finished The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins and can't find the words to describe how amazing it is! It's exhilarating, exciting, gets your heart racing and leaves you in constant suspense! This is my review on the final book in this fantastic series:

Mockingjay starts when Katniss is standing in the remains of her old house, in the Seam. Within 15 minutes of Katniss blowing the force field in the Quarter Quell there were planes in the sky and bombs were raining down on District 12. It was Gale, Katniss' best friend and hunting partner, who saved over 800 residents, including Prim and her mother by leading them to the Meadow. They managed until the hovercraft from District 13 arrived. They know are all residents of District 13, each given a compartment underground. It was a shock saying no one knew District 13 even existed, instead it was all underground. As she walks back to Victors Village and goes into the house belonging to her she finds Buttercup Prim's pet cat. All she can think is how he survived but thousands of people didn't? But then she notices a sent from upstairs and goes to find out what it is. On her dresser she finds a white single rose and knows immediately who it's from-President Snow.

When they get back to District 13 both Katniss and Gale are needed in Command. When Katniss notices the screen she see's Caesar Flickerman and Peeta and is shocked to see that he is still alive and looking healthy!. Peeta was captured by the Capitol when District 13 picked up Katniss in the Quarter Quell. When he calls for a Ceasefire Katniss makes a decision. She decides to agree to become the Mockingjay, the symbol of Rebellion. What everyone has been trying to persuade her to become since she arrived and why the rebels saved her instead of Peeta. She makes Coin agree that if she becomes the Mockingjay her family will get to keep Buttercup, that she will be allowed to go out and hunt with Gale, Peeta, Annie and the other captured victors will be granted immunity, it will be announced in Public and she will KILL SNOW!

As tensions rise and battles commence will the rebels win? Will Katniss and Peeta ever see each other again? Who will be killed in the war? What will happen to Katniss if the rebels lose? Will Katniss kill snow? What twists and turns are too come?

SPOILER ALERT!

The last few chapters kept my heart racing and I couldn't work out what would happen next! When I thought I knew, there was another twist and the whole story changed! I wasn't expecting Prim's death but then I was completely shocked when Katniss saw President Coin's true colors and killed her instead of President Snow(Even though he ended up dying). I was also shocked when Katniss' mother went to District 2 to start up a new hospital instead of going back to District 12 to be with Katniss but I can see the reasons why she couldn't come back.

The thing everyone wants to find out is who Katniss ends up marrying! I did want her to end up with Gale up until the final few chapters and I realized that Peeta truly loves her and would die for her(as we all saw from the first two books) I also realized, like Katniss, that Peeta is the one she needs most. She struggled when Peeta was captured by the Capitol and when he arrived back with his head messed up with Tracker Jacker Venom but while in the arena she didn't seem to miss Gale as much. So, when Peeta returned to District 12 and they made the book full of all the things they should never forget It really touched me. The final few lines left me in tears when Peeta asks Katniss 'You love me, real or not real?' and she answers 'Real' especially because this line was used earlier in the book and helped to build back up Peeta's proper memories.

The Epilogue for me didn't answer enough questions. I would have loved to have found out:
-What happened to Gale?
-Did Katniss' mother ever come back?
-What were her two children called?
-What happened to Finnick and Annie's child?
-Did Plutarch stay as President?
-The main one for me was what happened to Haymitch?

Even though it didn't answer those questions the ending for Katniss and Peeta was perfect! I loved the way Suzanne Collins wrote the epilogue explaining how Katniss said there are no more Hunger Games and the memorials have been built but saying that the questions are only just beginning for them. How her children take the words for the song she sang to Rue for advantage and how they don't know they play on a graveyard. The part I LOVED was the way she ended the whole series with Katniss is explaining how she plays a game in her head on the bad mornings about all the good things she's seen even though it's repetitive after all these years then, Katniss ends on-"But there are worst games to play"  This was an ending that left you wanting more but had a point behind it!

SPOILER OVER!

I would rate this book a 10/10(without the epilogue) because you can't work out what will happen next and when something does happen it changes the story! Also, it kept my heart racing! The battle scenes were so realistic and I could picture every scene in my head. It made me feel every emotion possible from hating Snow to feeling like you know each and every character like there your own best friend/sister/lover! I would recommend this book for ages 12+ because it is violent(as there is a rebellion) and it can be hard to understand at a young age as it tackles grown up topics like war, death and murder. The only part that disappointed me slightly was the epilogue because even though it gave the end for Katniss and 'her lover' I would have loved to find out the ending for the other main characters!!

You have to put this series on the top of your 'MUST BUY!' list! I'm sad to see it all end but what a FANTASTIC series! The ending leaves you wanting more from Katniss' story. I can't wait to see it all come alive on the big screen over the next few years!

THE HUNGER GAMES CATCHING FIRE REVIEW!!

Another exhilarating book from The Hunger Games series! I really don't know how Suzanne Collins does it!

This book continues a few months after the Hunger Games, Katniss and Peeta are back home and it's the morning of the Victory Tour where they will travel to all the districts including the Capitol. Katniss gets a visit from President Snow who warns her that after her episode with the berries when she was in the arena the districts are on the brink of an uprising. He also warns her that she knows about her kiss with Gale and she will have to prove too a lot of people including himself that her relationship with Peeta is real, or the president will make Gale pay for it! With the warning in her head she heads off on the Victory Tour with Peeta(her fellow victor) Effie(the person that keeps them in charge) and Haymitch(their mentor). When they arrive at their first stop District 11(the district Rue was from)  all goes well until the end of their speeches where them and the district makes a big mistake that leaves a shocking consequence. Katniss and Peeta continue with their tour and when they get too the Capitol Katniss realises  all they have done so far is not enough so at their interview Peeta gets down on one knee and proposes but is this really happily ever after? As they arrive back from the tour things go from bad to worse, with rebellion brewing in the districts and the MockingJay pin Katniss wore in the arena a symbol of rebellion a BIG bombshell is dropped, that nobody see's coming: for the Hunger Games 'Quarter Quell' which is celebrated every 25 years.

This book continues the series with a BANG! Exhilarating, exciting and leaving you in even more suspense than the first part of the trilogy. I would rate this book another BIG 10/10 as you don't see anything coming and you can't put it down. I would again recommend this book for ages 12+ because again it is the Hunger Games so there are deaths and murders(which is a more grown up topic) and it can be hard to understand for the younger readers. I would just like to add that the ending is unbelievable and you need the second book on hand because of the way it leaves you in such, shocking suspense. This book and series is a MUST READ there is only one word to describe it all WOW!!!!

THE HUNGER GAMES BY SUZANNE COLLINS REVIEW!!

WOW, that's all I can say! This book is exhilarating, exciting and forever leaving you in complete suspense.

This book tells the story of Katniss Everdeen, who lives in District 12 in the nation of Panem(Once know as North America). Katniss steps forward to take her sister Prim's place in the annual 'Hunger Games' when she gets chosen in a 1 in 8000 chance! The Hunger Games is a fight to the death where only 1 tribute is left standing. There are 12 districts in Panem and each district has to send 1 boy and 1 girl(Tributes) to the brutal games, making 24 tributes. In the games there is only 1 rule-Kill or be Killed. Along with her is the boy tribute from her district Peeta Mellark, her mentor Haymitch who is the only former winner of the Hunger Games from her district and Effie Trinket who prepares them for their death. As they get ready to prepare from the games all of the districts and the Capitol are watching, if they want to survive they will need good sponsors so they will have to get noticed. On the night before the games Peeta annouces his love for Katniss at the interviews in front of the nation, but what will this bring for them. This is a story where to win you will have to kill and be ready to put up a fight.

There are LOADS more twists and turns but I will ruin the whole story if I give it away and I don't want to do that because it's what makes the story SO GREAT!. Lets just say you won't see any of it coming. I HAVE to give this book a VERY big 10/10 because as I said at the beginning it keeps you in complete suspense, there is so much action and excitement, you just can't put it down.  The ending is such a cliffhanger I would suggest having the second book on hand(Unlike me). I would recommend this book for ages 12+ because it is violent as it is a fight to the death but still a MUST READ!.Just I am now TOTALLY OBSESSED with 'The Hunger Games' you have got to read it. I don't know how Suzanne Collins did it but it seems impossible to write such a FANTASTIC book! I payed £3.99 for this book(as it was on offer) and what a BARGAIN! It has 458 pages of complete exhilaration and is know my favorite book of ALL TIME!! I would also like to add it has recently been made into a film and is know the top film in the WORLD!
I LOVE IT!

I am now on the second book in the trilogy 'Catching Fire' which is also AMAZING and has SO many surprises you really don't see any of them coming! You really can't describe how great this series is in words!
